The heritage of a grest artist

„Experience what needs to be preserved.“

Albert Anker left an immense heritage of artwork, thoughts, objects and cultural testimony. About 800 oil paintings, about the same number of aquarelles and countless drawings and scetches are preserved in public and private collections. His decendants looked after his cultural heritage of national interest in his house in Ins and opened it up to the public. The foundation „Albert Anker –Haus Ins“ continues this tradition with the help of the local community.

Duringh his lifetime Anker was awarded repeatedly. The decoration of the „Chevalliers de la Légion d’honneur“, the doctoral honour of the university of Bern, various medals thrue international exhibitions in Paris, Vienna, Munich and Berlin, such as the big state funeral in 1910 are proof of his work and appreciation.

Museums and collectors maintain Ankers work and attract substantial numbers of visitors on a regular basis, nationally and internationally with the interest of museums and visitors from such countries as France, Germany, England, USA, Australia, Singapore and Japan.

The Centre Albert anker wants to carry on the radiance of this grand spirit and impressionable person and make it accessible for the younger generation.

« I just did a sketch in a pharmacy. There might not come anything out of it but one does whats possible... »
To Mrs. Anker, Murten, Juli 1876

Quote from Ankers diary about the change of centuries 1899/1900:

„I carry three different apprehensions:

  1. The huge and undemocratic union of power and influence in only a few hands, the total contamination of political principals thrue material interests.
  2. The billion debt and its threat to the independence of our country.
  3. The dangerous position of the state as the biggest employer in a time of impetuous societal turmoil.”
