Experiencing what needs to be preserved

The Albert Anker House Ins Foundation maintains and processes the extensive estate, which is made accessible to an interested public. With the project Centre Albert Anker, the studio and the residential house will be attractively upgraded as a historical location for visitors, and the new building will be used as a safe place to store and present the art and cultural assets. The opening of the Centre Albert Anker is planned for spring 2024.

Information on the 2021 to 2024 construction phase:

The project from the Albert Anker House to the Centre Albert Anker is well underway. The Art Pavilion will be completed in the spring of 2022 and then renovation work will begin on the Albert Anker House, which is expected to last until the spring of 2024. During this time, the Albert Anker House will be closed for security reasons and cannot be visited. We are already looking forward to the reopening in spring 2024 and will then be happy to welcome you to the new Albert Anker Centre.

From Albert Anker- Haus to Centre Albert Anker

Centre Alber Anker in Ins gives way to a unique cultural site with strong regional ties and a national charisma. To this day the residence and art studio of Albert Anker (1831- 1910) remained mostly in the same condition as it was when the important swiss painter and his family lived and worked there for centuries. As one of the very few completely conserved artist residences in the history of art, it offers insight into the world of Albert Anker, who during his lifetime was internationally intertwined and who had a second residence and art studio in Paris.

The foundation Albert Anker- Haus in Ins has the objective to conserve this unique treasure and to present. It according to the audiences demands. To store and, at the same time, exhibit the numerous works of art and objects from Ankers life, an art pavilion will be constructed. The residence, the art studio and the art pavilion will merge into a unique place of experience and insight in Switzerland.

The pamphlet summarizes the vision for the new Centre Albert Anker.

Albert Anker

Albert Anker (1831- 1910) is without a doubt the most popular swiss painter. His portraits of children and aged people of Ins, his village of origin, are unforgettable. Less known are his drawings, fayences and effortless sketches created in Paris.
The research around Anker discovers the artist in a new light as a progressive and broadly interested humanist. From Ankers hand stem the most stunning depictions of children, brought forward by european realism of the 19th century.

The great great grandson narrates

Matthias Brefin, born in 1943 in Basel, is the great great grandson of Albert Anker. In this section he will repeatedly share anectodes about the life of Albert Anker. Be excited about what will unfold here over time! To the stories.

Matthias Brefin is a retired hospital pastor and a  fourth generation descendant of Albert Anker. In collaboration with the foundation he preserves the artists residence. Before his profession as a pastor he studied natural science, worked three years as a technician in Benin, Africa and had an intense fascintion for sailing early on in his life- just like Maurice Anker.
