Puppet show
Many children sat as models for Albert Anker. For their amusement he staged puppet shows with self-made puppets. He fashioned his own mahlsticks, a useful utensil for his art, and, when they broke, he transformed them into human-shaped stick puppets dressed in leftover pieces of cloth. In the workshop we will, together with people from the Ins puppet theater, create our own figures in the same way Anker did. We will breathe life into all of them—whoever they are, whether pirates, robbers, princes, or princesses.

Capturing the everyday life of rural children in paint
Albert Anker portrayed the daily life and chores of children in the farming community in many of his pieces. One of Switzerland’s leading artists, he was famous for working in this genre. In the workshop we will be viewing various of his paintings of children and in this way immerse ourselves in the time he lived. On our visit to Albert Anker’s studio, we will explore the artist’s tools that he worked with, and then we can start being creative ourselves.

Written and painted words
Albert Anker was not only interested in the visual arts. In the written word he also found a perpetual source of fascination. He rated it very highly and focused a lot of his attention on it in being an avid reader, mastering many languages, prolifically writing letters, or, in a very special way, by making many notes in his “Carnets,” which he has left us as a legacy. The focus of the workshop is the blend of the written word and imagery that made Anker such an exceptional human being.
