Albert Anker – An artist of many facets
The house that was the artist’s home has survived almost completely intact and the same is true for the nineteenth-century artist’s studio in the attic. These fortunate circumstances contribute to making the Centre Albert Anker, complete with the comprehensive collection of his artworks and cultural objects, a unique place of cultural and artistic heritage to visit.
The Centre Albert Anker Collection is divided up into various sections: The studio with all the items that Albert Anker had collected, painting utensils, props, and a library comprising over 1,000 books in German, French, English, Italian, Greek, Hebrew, and Latin. Then there are the historic living quarters with furniture and everyday objects that were used in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Additionally, numerous letters have been preserved along with written documents and photographs. The latter holdings have been deposited in the Burgerbibliothek Bern for conservation reasons. And the legacy of the Albert Anker House Foundation includes some 900 sketches, compositions, drawings, watercolors, and studies in oils that were executed by Albert Anker.
